What was the lowest point of your life?  How far did you fall?   

Were your dreams shattered?  How helpless were you rendered by this turn of events?

Was it your error?  Was it even something that had anything to do with what you did?

At its beginning, Kamisama Kiss is the story of a young woman brought low by things completely outside of her control.  Nanami Momozono has just been rendered homeless. 

Her father's gambling addiction has resulted in him fleeing town.   She has no way to pay his debts, rent, and bills.  She sits in a park at the lowest moment of her life.

In her sinking desperation, she hears someone in need.  He's an odd man hiding from a dog in a tree, due to some crippling phobia.

Leaving the last of her possessions behind to help the man, she calms down the dog so it leaves.  The man slow climbs down and thanks her.

This is the most important moment of her life.  This is also a moment that did not happen by chance.   

Her act of kindness does not go unrewarded.  She receives a fateful kiss on her head.  The grateful man says he has a house that he will give her.

Following the simple map the man drew, she heads to the place she hopes to at least sleep at for the night.  The place is a run down shrine.   Feeling tricked and betrayed, she is about to storm off when she has the spirits of the shrine talk to her.

What transpires is far better seen than simply described:

Nanami Momozono enters a world with a solid foundation of Japanese mythology.  Rarely seen or known by Western eyes, most of the English speaking world will not immediately know what to make of.

This is not just the modern world you know.  It's a world of Yōkai and another dimension.  These are supernatural creatures and spirits that walk the unseen world, just as the gods of Japan do.

This is also a showcase of various Shinto beliefs.  It is one that is as rich and varied as it would be if it were a well written story about the Olympian gods instead.

Nanami Momozono has just entered a world where she is extremely underpowered and vulnerable.  She is literally a target for death, where an evil creature could gain her divinity by eating her heart.

Her only choice is to learn how to do the duties of her new station.   Along the way, she will meet the love of her life.

As dark as it could have been as a story, this is a great comedy and couples anime.  On Crunchyroll, it's listed under: Kamisama Hajimemashita.

Nanami Momozono dreams of living an average school life just like any other high school girl does. Instead, she must cope with the fact that her father, who is a constant gambler, has accumulated a bunch of gambling debts in her name. After saving him from the dog, she learns that the man's name is Mikage. Upon learning about Nanami's current situation, in a perfect example of how good deeds are rewarded, he gives her his home as a token of his gratitude. She accepts the offer because she is homeless. When Nanami arrives at Mikage's home, she is shocked to see that it is not a normal home but a shrine for worship. After being greeted by Onikiri and Kotetsu, who are the keepers of the shrine, she meets Tomoe, Mikage's familiar, and she learns that Mikage used to be the Land God of the shrine and has bestowed upon her his mark on her forehead so that she may be the new God. At first, Nanami is reluctant, but as she lives with Tomoe, Onikiri, and Kotetsu she begins to understand and works hard in her new position as the Land God. As the story progresses Nanami finds herself falling in love with Tomoe, but he rejects her because the love between a human and a yokai is taboo. Despite saying that, Tomoe finds himself falling in love with her too."
