Angie's meeting with her brother has a lot more context. This includes the Duke watching what Leon is doing with the ships.
Angie's brother is far more of an interference in her life than what you see in the anime. He is keeping a close distrustful eye on Leon.
He warns her about getting too close to Olivia, but is rebutted by Angie. He then says Angie alone is responsible for her commoner friend's protection.
He also shares the fate of the captured enemy Princess. We also learn the fate of Stephanie Olfery so far.
Duke Redgrave's loyalist faction is in the decline. A new faction is quickly amassing an alliance of noble families large enough to overrule the loyalists.
The kingdom may be headed for an unchecked power struggle. Angelica and Leon have powerful enemies in the rising faction.
Leon's plot to lose to the five idiots goes horribly wrong. He wanted to lose and be underestimated. He ended up having to win to save Greg's life. He takes it far worse than in the anime.
What is becoming very dangerous to both Olivia and Angie romantically is what is going on politically in the background. Two Countess families are now beginning to position themselves to be in striking range politically to pair with Leon and his new Viscount household.
Neither of Angie nor Olivia have noticed the change in the wind. Olivia is oblivious to the fact that despite her confession, the ranking system will stop Leon from being able to marry her. This is a man whose mother that he adored was forced to only be a mistress, he would not be comfortable with that fate for Olivia.
Angelica has taken no steps to try and make a personal request of leave from the Queen to potentially marry beneath her station either. I also can't say for certain that Angie herself would not be in danger should she do so at this point of the story.
As much as the manga will play this for laughs, the Dierdre Roseblade and Clarice Atlee are in a position to marry Leon without Royal approval. Knowing more about Leon than they should, they are treating Leon's low ranking mom with respect as if she were a peer rather than the lowest ranking of nobility possible. That's a scary level of grasp on how Leon's family dynamic actually works. They know who the parent is that he respects and loves the most.
If it becomes a formal arranged marriage, it is decided between the mothers. Politically, both girls are quietly letting Leon's mom know they acknowledge her matriarchal power in this regard, giving her equal respect as if she were a high ranking noble herself. I'm not sure if Leon's parents understand that.
This opens the door for any level of political maneuverings to make that happen, including bribery and blackmail. In short, they are talking to Leon's parents and making themselves known.
The good word being put in by these families can have extra meaning attached too it. It can be the formation of new political alliances within the kingdom. Those kinds of alliances are often formalized with marriages just like foreign ones. Despite what you might think, possibly as a result of never being vulnerable to this before, Angie is unexpectedly blind to what is going on just under her nose.
As a friend to both Angie and Leon, Clarice prods Angie's jealousy to wake her up to what is going on under her nose. She gives a kind slap to Angie's ego as she tells Leon that she has heard about his hot spring.
Angie seems to actually waking up to see what is going on. There are two Countesses are in the room with Viscount Leon's parents. These are two women within striking distance that can steal Leon's hand right from under Angie's nose, right now.
Keep in mind, the nobility is beginning to wake up to here is that it would be better to have Leon as a friend or relative than as an enemy. Even if they underestimate what the last battle was, Leon is starting to be seen as a potential threat.
Angie's household would happily marry Leon off to an allied family close to his current rank. Another point that isn't in the story yet is that the Prince has a younger brother, Jake Rapha Holfort, who is the new Crown Prince.
Angie's mother might still dream of being the mother of the next Queen and see opportunity there. Thus, Angie's hopes that are displayed in this clip may literally mean nothing to her family.
After putting down the threat to the students in the finale, Leon begins receiving invites and marriage contract proposals. Take note of the one that wants her 10 sex slaves and other lovers taken care of.
Volume 3 prologue part 1
“They’re not attracted to my own self, but to my status and property. How low of them.”
[This is a matter of marriages between nobles, so there’s not much meaning to ones own self in the first place. In fact, take a look at this letter.]
一A single letter floated up.
I took it to look over its contents.
It seems that Luxon’s able to check the contents of a letter without opening the envelope.
What a convenient thing.
“Is there something interesting written here? Whoa.”
When I looked at the contents of the letter, they were yet again terrible.
Written inside were someone’s conditions for marriage, including the construction of a residence in the royal capital that can hold about ten people and to also look after her troublesome lovers.
Are the girls who present such harsh conditions sane?
Then again, I’m dealing with the academy’s girls.
Women domineer over men──this is the reality of “that otome game”.
When the game world became a reality, things were so harsh that I felt the strange urge to laugh.
[All the girls are quite awful. Just whose child are they are planning to give birth to?]
“If I were to get married, I would want to produce a heir and then just live a free life. It’s not like I’m asking for something unusual. I mean, my father’s legal wife is doing the same.”
Are these kinds of things even allowed?
──Unfortunately, this world indeed allows such things.
This really is a cruel world.
Leon's typical outright rejection of these could create political issues as Leon is high enough rank that these proposals are coming from powerful families within the kingdom. He's still closest to Angie and Livia who are out of his reach without Royal approval to marry above or below his station. There is also the question should he find a wife near his rank if he'd be allowed to keep his friendship with both girls.
The last major note I plan to make before season 2 is the following, which is a bit into Book 3 and what will be season 2. A conflict happens which I won't get into due to spoilers. At the same time, the Prince shows the first hints of falling out with Marie. Both lead to the following scene:
I'll add the novel bit in the next post for context on what I'm about to bring up.
Otomege Volume 3 Chapter 8 (Part 5) - rough translation
Julius lifted up his face in respond to Ange’s words.
「──Do you hate me for betraying your feeling? That’s why you won’t lend me your strength right?」
Ange noticed from hearing Julius’s words.
(I wonder why──I don’t feel any hatred or frustration anymore.)
Her worry toward Leon was stronger than her wish for revenge.
At the same time, she wanted to see Leon’s face quickly.
「If you asked my just a little while ago, it’s the truth that I hated your highness. But, now I’m──in love with Leon. I don’t hold any resentment for your highness.」
When Ange said that with a smile, Julius was captivated by her face.
He was going to say something, but the knights of the duke found them and ran toward them.
「My lady, so you’re here!」
Ange immediately ordered them.
「We will head to the underground from here. Bring his highness together with us too.」
「Yes-!」
The knights surrounded Julius, and then they started evacuating toward the underground hangar.
Livia gripped Ange’s hand.
「Are you alright? That, err──」
「Don’t mind it. I’m alright. It feels like I’m set free from many things.」
Ange said that with a smile. Julius looked down seeing that.
Livia looked at Julius and asked.
「What’s wrong?」
Julius smiled in self-derision.
「This is my first time seeing Angelica smiling like that. ──That’s all.」
Ange could hear those words of Julius, but she didn’t even pay any heed to it and worried about Leon.
I'm just bringing up the rather scary reality of Angie's position here, regardless of her moment of happiness. If the Prince changes his mind and wants her back, even against her will, she would be forced to marry him and have his children.
Angie's family and the Royal family can make that happen. They would make that happen. Angie's feelings and her multiple humiliations at the hands of the Prince are not even a factor, if Julius is restored as Crown Prince or is even just restored to full Prince status.
Most of us have kissed a few frogs looking for love. I challenge you to think about that for a second.
Please think of the ex, or past crush, you have that would repulse you most to be with now. Please think about them having the power to force you into a relationship with them, even though they know you love another and have no feelings for them. They will also force you to have children with them. It is pretty repulsive isn't it?
The very fact you love another might be their actual motivation. They may have finally fully noticed you, after taking you completely for granted. The reason might be nothing more than their safety person is about to be gone.
That level of loss to your own basic human rights can happen at that level of peerage station, under the pretext of it being a duty for the good of the nation. As Angie has never rebelled against her parents or the Royal family when they sent to her bad fate in multiple timelines, due to her sense of duty to both, there is no reason to believe they could not force her into such a marriage trap at this moment...
