I really liked that they tried again as the server was running down.   A big salute for those that tried.   =)

The Bring back of Guardian WARS

https://www.forumarchive.cityofheroes.dev/topic/231992#comment-3090637

quote from The Nezz "Back before i13 (yeah, yeah, I know... Dead Horse) we have a last and final Guardian Wars Hurrah... It was a blast, i believe it was like a week before i13 went live, and just about everyone showed up. The PvP'er and even the PvE'ers. Both sides were nicely balanced out and there was like 100 people in RV. Was the best and most memorable PvP Experience I ever had. It was so chaotic, I loved it. Hero and Villain Team all over the place. I remember going Solo on my Stalker and was purposely picking on my friend hero side XD She was a troller lol... She was on a full team and they were together. I would hit MoG, Demonic Aura and Insps and suicide run into them and kill her and run off XD LOL..... ah, it was great. I would love to see that every week again. It just makes me a sad, sad panda to see how things have become :-("

Attempt to remake the Guardian War by the PVPEC rep Inferno Fusion

from Dizty Blonde:

As a person incremental to the original War ( no pun intended) I would suggest you contact sg leaders ingame. An awful lot of recruiting went on to make the WAR a success. Another draw was the rp factor Lalyn added with the whole advertisement thread. I really hope this event is a success but even back then with a larger game population as well as a larger pvp community on Guardian the event was a challenge to populate( much less manage). This type of thing is bigger than just show up and pew pew. Let me clarify.... on one hand you have people who show up just to come....then you have the people that are there for badges.... then you have the people that are there because they actually organized beforehand and want to kick hero or villian ***..... You get my point? It's a great event but alot of work. Kudo's to you for trying to bring it back!!

Edited because I went searching for the original thread with all the roleplay. Unfortunately the forum Monster ate it.

We have small parts of that thread here:  https://haunt2003.com/index.php/community/cox/archanos-rises-paragon-falls-recreating-the-guardian-wars-thread/

What's missing is the parts of the community that would tell their own story and add in their characters.   It was like a school art project where everyone drew on the wall.   The art of it was how everyone's stories mixed together and made the event into a living and breathing comic book adventure.

I remember a rather Zen style passage from a supergroup made up of martial arts, whose supergroup leader was quite the writer.   He told of a young student member going to attend the event and the risk to their life for doing so.   He himself decides to go to protect his students and tells them very sternly, "to be careful, HAUNT plays to win".  It was an amazing compliment to my own guild that in a game where my side was literally given lower power toons than the hero side counterparts, that we were to be taken seriously.

I also think this style of getting a community involved works very well in super hero MMOs.  It gets new blood into the pvp scene.

We did it again on the Public Enemies server in DCUO.   The thread for that was here:  https://haunt2003.com/index.php/community/dcuo/the-society-rises-the-watchtower-falls-film-at-11-the-dcuo-public-enemies-war/

In DCUO, we'd move between a hero guild hosting and a villain guild hosting week by week.   Since it was open world we could spread things out.

Another component was we'd do a rev up posting to get everyone stirred up the day before in both events.   The Guardian events always had the same video music to announce the next day's fight:

The Jock Jam (Megamix) - ESPN Presents The Jock Jam

We host screenshot pictures were then posted highlighting the event.   Many of which were lost with different sites, unfortunately.

We'd give thanks to the supergroups and supervillain groups.   We'd also have a short story to post of the conclusion.  We'd also hunt for a song for the event, focusing on superhero themes if they were there.

Example:

dragonchic721

Justice League - Fly From the Inside

A little later in the week, we'd rev people up for the next fight.  That was our formula, in both games, rinse and repeat.   It just takes a lot of time and effort to move gamers together.

It's the community as a whole that makes or breaks these large scale events.   It isn't your guild, it's networks of guilds on both sides, in a friendly competition to beat the ever living snot out of each other.

Large scale pvp is great for beginners, because it not only takes the sting out of dying, they are witnessing something they didn't even know was possible in a game.   We had our allies and our honored adversaries.

When it works, it is magic.  If you capture their imagination, people will talk about it for years, because everyone was a part of it.   It becomes an era for that game.

You just have to take a risk and share the glory.   Sometimes, you can make miracles people have never heard of if you are willing to take risks.   =)
